I'm sure this has been discussed before, but a search didn't turn up anything helpful. Does anybody use this feed? It is sold at Wal Mart, but the bag says made by manna pro.

WOW! Wish our Walmart carried it. Manna Pro is a good company. I've used one of their products when I needed to put weight on a starved horse.

Haven't tried their chick feed though.

The wal mart here sells all sorts of stuff. The Manna Pro starter, grit, and oyster. They carry lots of horse stuff as well. I prefer to shop at the feed store, but it is very difficult to get their with my work schedule.

I have tried Wal-Marts "Manna Pro Egg Maker" when I first got chickens.

First of all, it is not really cheap, because the bag only holds #40, not #50 like Purina brand or so. Second, reading the"eggmakers label" was scary: it only had 15 % or less Protein, a lot of the protein coming out of animal "by-products" like feather meal, which leads to feather picking among your birds. It still gives me goose bumps and now, where I know more about chickens and their nutritional needs, I still feel guilty that I have ever wasted my money on that and even fed it to my chickens.
Also, I always write down, how many eggs I get per day/week. The "egg-maker" time was the time with the slowest egg production. The egg yolk was pale, even with free ranging for a certain period of the day. Bottom line: NEVER EVER AGAIN. I did not check the label lately, but I am almost sure that nothing has really changed: you get what you are paying for....

The WalMart site has only 2 reviews of this product. Both give it 5 stars. However, I take the ratings with a grain of salt, as: the product ingredients are not listed, WalMart claims it can be fed to mature horses as well as layers, no answer was given the question of whether it contained animal byproducts, and one of the reviewers is located at the north pole!

You thought it was an inferior product. What feed do you recommend for layers and why? And how much will a white leghorn eat? I'm a complete newbie. TIA.

White leghorn is the highest egg producing hen; she will utilize a lot of protein, calcium and water.

IMO a 15% protein layer pellet is too low for high production birds; to find a higher protein level, like a game bird feed, is useful; and supplement with oystershells. To increase oystershell intake, I make a yummy plate of leftovers sprinkled lavishly with oystershell.

Yes, I have been using Family Farm Egg Maker 15 for awhile. My hens laid more eggs than other brands. However, much to my disappointment WalMart no longer carry them. Does anyone know where I can buy them?

The Walmarts that carry it is by local demand, you need to find one local that does or convince your stores manager to add it to their inventory... There is only one Walmart by me that carries it, but they only carry 5 bags at a time so it sells out usually the same day it arrives...

I don't use layer feed so I can't comment on it beyond that on the layer but the Family Farm scratch is a good deal at least around me, I use the scratch as wild bird food, just mix in some sunflower seeds and it'a bout half the price per pound of other wild bird foods...

That link has shown "Not Available at this time" for about the last year...
